Air Display Schedule
Here is the planned lineup for the air display. We will do our best to maintain this order, however, weather, aircraft servicability or other factors may result In change. Flexibility is the key to airshow planning. smiley The SAR demo will begin around 1pm, and we will be moving into our show shortly afterward, so we hope people will plan to get to Foynes early. A ‘Park and ride’ system will be in operation from 11 am with lots of attractions, including live music to keep everyone entertained. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen!
We plan to open with a Water Safety presentation including a winching demonstration with a lifeboat and the Irish Coastguard rescue helicopter based in Shannon. Click on the image above for more information about the SAR group.
John Brennan from Sligo will do a “splash and go” in his SeaRey, EI SEA.
Ferocious Frankie has fought in WWII, starred in Hollywood blockbusters and come 2nd in the Reno Air Races (without modification) having narrowly been beaten by a heavily modified, hugely more powerful machine. Click on the image to learn more about this exciting flying machine!
Gerry Humphreys and Eddie Goggins have performed popular and exciting solo flying displays for many years. In 2013 they teamed up to create the first ever Irish civilian aerobatic formation team. Harry Humphreys is next, flying his MAI-89 “Mini Mig” Designed in Moscow it comes from the same stable as Mig Jet fighters, this is an incredibly strong light aircraft using advanced materials including titanium. Click on the image above for a video of the Mini Mig in action.
The BD5 The BD5 is an aeroplane with huge looks, massive personality, James Bond pedigree and yet extremely rare when it comes to flying examples. Designed in the early 1970’s as a personal homebuilt ‘mini jet’, kits were sold all around the world. Howard Cox’s example of the Jim Bede design has been over 30 years in the making, with a twin-rotor 110 hp water-cooled Wankel engine specifically designed for certified aircraft use by Midwest Engines. Dave Bruton is next in the amazing Sukhoi Su-26. This is a single-seater no-compromise pure aerobatics plane from the former Soviet Union. First flown in 1984, the type has undergone many refinements over the years and has dominated Aerobatic World Championships since. Click on the image above for a video of the SU-26.
Next is a demonstration from the Irish Historic Flight Foundation. New this year, the team plans to fly the Iolar (Aer Lingus’s first plane) and a formation of 3 DH chipmunks in Irish Army Aer Corps colours for the first time together at a public display. Click on the image above to learn more…
Hawkers worked on a number of designs for jet fighters after World War 2, and the Hunter was surely one of the most successful of all. A classic fast jet flown by highly a experienced former RAF Harrier pilot who Is also an Airbus Captain for a major international airline. The beautiful Christen Eagle with its spectacular colour scheme turns heads wherever it goes. A True sports cars of the sky, the 2-seat Eagle is great for aerobatics, and fun to fly. Based in Sligo, this example was built in the USA and is flown by Andrew Fenton. Click on the image above to see a video of the Christen Eagle in action.
Next Eddie Goggins makes his second appearance in the show, this time in his CAP 231. The CAP-23x family of aircraft was designed for competition aerobatics. It is derived from the CAP 230, which was developed in 1985 primarily for the French Air Force. Click on the image above to see a video of the CAP 231 in action.
Team Raven are a formation aerobatic display team that formed in May 2014. Entirely self-funded, the Team has striven to create a professional and effective display team with a corporate image right off the bat that sets the right tone in all that they do. Although in some senses they are differing characters, the Team Raven pilots (and indeed support crew) share the same professionalism, drive, enthusiasm and passion for aviation and display flying; they are also great mates with a shared sense of humour! The Stinson Reliant was a popular single-engine four to five seat high-wing monoplane manufactured by the Stinson Aircraft Division of the Aviation Manufacturing Corporation of Wayne, Michigan. The Reliant is a high-wing fixed tailwheel land monoplane used by the U.S. Army in World War II as a utility aircraft, designated UC-81, and as trainer designated AT-19. They were also used by the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force for light transport and communication duties. This example, recently restored by the owner-pilot Howard Cox (also making his second appearance in today’s show) is powered by a Lycoming radial engine.
